Mountain Board Trucks Explained

A mountain board truck is the mechanism that attaches the wheels to the deck and allows you to steer the board by tilting. The steering resistance of the truck can be adjusted depending on rider weight and riding style.

  • Low steering resistance favours lighter riders and will make the board turn more easily, making it more suitable for carving.
  • High steering resistance favours heavier riders and will allow the board to handle better at higher speeds by reducing speed wobble.

There are currently three designs of mountain board truck available...

  • 10mm Skate Trucks - with a 10mm diameter axle.
  • 12mm Skate Trucks - with a 12mm diameter axle.
  • 12mm Channel Trucks - with a 12mm diameter axle.

Skate Style Mountain Board Trucks...

A typical mountain board skate truck

Skate Trucks have a 10mm or 12mm axle diameter, and use urethane bushings to offer steering resistance. They are very lightweight (around half the weight of Channel Trucks) and offer quick and easy (but limited) adjustment. 12mm Skate Trucks offer increased strength over standard 10mm Skate Trucks, resulting in a board that is stronger for downhill use and more resistant to sideways force.

The steering resistance of Skate Trucks can be tuned by adjusting the kingpin bolt located underneath the truck...

  • Tightening the kingpin by turning it clockwise will preload the urethane bushing and will increase the steering resistance.
  • Loosening the kingpin by turning it anti clockwise will decrease the steering resistance.

Channel Mountain Board Trucks...

A typical mountain board channel truck

Channel Trucks have a 12mm axle diameter and are significantly stronger than Skate Trucks. They use steel springs to provide steering resistance instead of urethane bushings, and are much more tuneable for rider weight and style. Riders weighing over 80kg and those intending to purchase a board for heavy downhill use should consider channel trucks.

Channel Trucks offer a much wider customisation range with upto 3 modes of adjustment...

  • Broad adjustment - spring position. The steering resistance can be significantly increased by moving the spring positions from the inside to the outside holes on the board.
  • Medium adjustment - eggshock choice. Eggshocks can be purchased in different durometers (hardnesses). A hard eggshock will offer more steering resistance.
  • Fine adjustment - spring compression (Scrub Boost Channel Truck only). The steering resistance can be increased by increasing the spring compression.
